More hazing victims uncovered

December 16, 2010

BLACKFOOT, Idaho (AP) — Police say more possible hazing victims have come forward after five former Blackfoot High School athletes were charged earlier this month.
Blackfoot Police Chief Moore says more charges are pending, but declined to say what they are or against whom they would be filed.
Nathan Walker, Anthony Clarke, Logan Chidester and Tyson Katseanes have been charged and are scheduled to appear in 7th District Court on Dec. 23. They face various misdemeanors and felony counts of forcible sexual penetration using a foreign object.
Authorities say a fifth former athlete at the school who is a juvenile also faces charges.

Let's stop the nonsense, gossip, slander, backbiting, speculation and finger pointing. We need to become sensitive to the needs of the victims and the accused as well as parties that may be involved. This is a time for a community to pull together not be torn apart from within. Blackfoot is a great place to live, please do not destroy that fact!

Great comment!!! I agree totally. This thing is getting blown up more and more with every rumor and angry comment. Let's let it rest a bit and hopefully not attract anymore national attention like the drama queen that sensationalized it on CNN.

No I don't believe EVERYTHING I read but I don't DISBELIEVE everything either. There are people who have been accused of some horrible things of which I hope your child never has to experience. If it were your child you would hopefully want something done about it. Boys will be boys is not a good enough excuse any more as one out of three children are bullied at school. I would hope the community would want to make school a safe place I know I do. You obviously have no idea what it feels like to be scared to go to school, LUCKY YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lilfav - you are obviously one of the boys charged or someone close to one, otherwise there is no way you would be talking how you are. I don't believe everything I read, but I do believe court documents. By the way this isn't a Bingham County attitude, this is an attitude of parents around the world, imagining these horrific things happening to their own children.

Don't blame the coaches and teachers for these boys actions. It also wasn't their parents fault. These young men were not in kindergarten, they were seniors in high school and most of them legal adults. They made their decisions and now will have to suffer the legal consequences of their actions.

The blame that falls on the coaches and tachers is knowing what had/was happening and doing nothing. Teachers have a LEGAL obligation to protect the kids that they are teaching. When you are a coach and a teacher you follow the same LEGAL obligation. Coaches who are not teachers do not have the same LEGAL obligation, but should always act in the best intrest of the child.
Are you saying that you don't think their coaches should be hold any responsibility? It happened on the bus- 25 feet or less from the coaching staff!! Of course they should be held accountable! If they can not control their players on a bus then they have no business being a coach. I don't think people are blaming teachers or coaches for the actions taken by these boys but rather the lack of action taken by the adults that are supposed to be in charge.

From what I understand, the suspects aren't refuting the charges at all as there are many witnesses and multiple victims that would be hard to do, only playing them down as "not that big of deal." Chalking it up to "boys will be boys." Well, what they did was rape, not hazing. I have many current and former student athletes in my circle of friends and family and when their stories of high school locker room teasing or bullying are shared, nothing even COMES CLOSE to the horrific crimes these boys committed which carry large sentences. If these charges ruin their name then they should have thought of that before they did it as we all have choices to make everyday that will affect how others think of us. They had a choice to make, a luxury their victims did not have and now their horrible choices have resulted in pain and suffering for others which they don't even seem to regret. The coaches and administrators who were responsible for the safety of their players and failed horribly should think long and hard about whether they are fit to fulfill their duties any longer. As a mom with children in the Blackfoot school district, I hope the teachers that I entrust my children with every day will pay more attention and take their jobs more seriously than these men did. My heart goes out to the victims and their families, they are the ones we should be worried about.

Is Blackfoot still locatated in the United States of America?

I am also a mother of children who attend BHS. No, my children are not athletes, but they are very involved in many activities at BHS. With that aside, I would just like to say that I am deeply disturbed by this entire situation. First, and foremost, Blackfoot is a wonderfully beautiful community with strong values and supportive neighbors. It disturbs me that our community is being portrayed world wide as a small town that allows these kinds of actions to take place because we hold our athletes on some kind of pedestal. I feel that one of the strengths in this community is that by and large we support all aspects of our childrens' lives and do so proudly. My point, to the world, this situation has not been ignored or pushed under any carpet because of who or what these boys accomplish athletically and in fact, has been handled swiftly and appropriately regardless of who these boys are. Secondly, my whole heart goes out to the victims of any bullying or hazing of any kind and feel as a community we should not support the actions of those who feel these types of actions are in anyway ok or just child's play. Thirdly, for the parents of these children my heart bleeds. I cannot even imagine what their families are going through. Fourthly, for the parents of those accused, again, my heart bleeds, regardless of the outcome of this case, their families are also suffering deeply. And Lastly, yet some how most importantly, This is the United States of America, these boys have not yet had their days in court and the world has them tried and convicted of crimes they did or did not commit. This community's responsibility, honestly, in my opinion, is to assure nothing like this is ever allowed to occur and insist that policies and procedures are in place ensuring it does not. Bottom line, we all so have the responsibility to respect the rights of all of those involved and allow them all of them (the victims and those accused) their day in court. We owe it to these families.
