Mother-daughter celebrate Firth win

Morning News — Leslie Mielke Bailey Nelson (on left) and her mom, Monica Backlund Nelson, lift the girls' basketball trophies they helped Firth win in 2014 and 1987, respectively.

FIRTH — The mother-daughter team of Monica Backlund Nelson and her daughter Bailey Nelson share some special memories centering around the Firth Girls' Basketball championship.
Both played on a Firth Girls' Basketball team that won the state championship.
Monica was part of the Firth team that won the first state championship in school history in 1987.
Bailey was on the 2014 Firth championship team.
"We were sitting around the dinner table one night and my dad, Maurice Backlund, said, 'Wouldn't it be neat if Firth won another state championship?'" Monica explained. "It became a goal.
"I just expected Firth to win before this," she said.
