No district championship, but Lady Broncos still alive after split

BLACKFOOT — If was not exactly the easiest way to get through the opening day of the 4A District 5/6 Tournament, but the Blackfoot Lady Broncos are still alive for the second and final star tournament berth after a split of their games on Tuesday at Blackfoot High School.
The defending district champion Broncos were beat in game one 5-4 by Pocatello in height innings setting up an elimination game with Century.
Matti Chavez ripped a walk-off double sending the Broncos to one more game on Thursday which will be a rematch with Pocatello.
But prior earning the rematch with the Indians the Broncos had to dig themselves out of an early 7-0 hole to the feisty Diamondbacks.
Century jumped out to a 3-0 lead getting three consecutive hits to start the game off of starter Morningrose Tobey.
The D-backs tacked on four more in the second and the Broncos and their faithful seemed shellshocked by the days events thus far.
in the bottom of the third the Broncos offense exploded and got themselves back in the game.
Blackfoot scored six runs on five hits, hitting for the cycle in the inning and climbing to within one run.
After a one out triple by Cassandra Clarke, the Broncos got on the board when Clarke scored on an error by the Diamondbacks catcher.
Matti Chavez drove in another run with an RBI infield single. Then the innings big blow came off the bat of Tobey.
Tobey slammed the first pitch she saw deep over the right-center field fence for a two-run home run.
After Sami Macfee who doubled scored on an error, Hadlie Henderson singled in the innings final run with a single to center.
Century tacked on a run in the fifth, which the Broncos answered when Taylor Beers scored on fielder's choice by Henderson.
Blackfoot took the lead for the first time in the six when they loaded the bases with no outs on a pair of singles and a hit batter.
Beers drove in the innings first run with a swinging bunt that traveled no more than 25 feet. Three batters later Tobey scored on an error to tie the game at 9-9.
Clarke led off the bottom of the seventh with a single. She promptly stole second.
Two batters later, Chavez ended the game with a ringing double to left field to end the game.
Chavez led the Broncos at the plate going 3-for-5 with two RBI. Clarke and three other Broncos had two hits in the game.
Earlier in the Blackfoot saw its hopes for a repeat district championship dashed with a 5-4 loss to Pocatello in eight innings.
Pocatello scored first getting three runs in the third inning on an RBI single from Kealee Hewatt and a two-run home run from Kristen Stucki.
Blackfoot cut the deficit to 3-2 an inning later when Beers singled home Sami Macfee who singled and stole second to start the inning.
Clarke drove in the innings second run on a fielder's choice later in the inning.
With one out in the sixth the Broncos got three consecutive singles to load the bases.
Clarke who recorded the first single came home to score on a single by Anicia Luna as the throw from center field went into the Broncos dugout.
Macfee drove home Luna two batters later to give the Broncos a 4-3 lead.
A Broncos error allowed the Indians to tie the game in the top of the seventh, Pocatello won the game in eighth on an single by Dani Jorgensen.
Blackfoot had runners on first and second with two out in the the bottom of the eighth but were unable to get the tying run across.
The Broncos and Indians will meet with the final state berth on the line on Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Blackfoot High School.
