North Fremont tops Firth in round one of tournament

ST. ANTHONY — A slow first quarter start spelled doom and gloom for the Firth Lady Cougars as they opened the sixth district 2A Nuclear Conference basketball tournament with a disappointing 51-27 loss to North Fremont at South Fremont High School on Tuesday evening.
"We played like a young team playing their first district tournament game," Firth head coach Sharla Cook said. "We will need to fix that before tomorrow night or our season will be over."
North Fremont got off to a dream start with a 20-7 first quarter. That large deficit was very tough to overcome for the FIrth squad and by the end of the first half it had ballooned to a 30-14 advantage for the Lady Huskies.
Despite being down by double-digits, the Lady Cougars kept at it on the court however as they employed a full court press that was more than effective on turning the Lady Huskies over. Unfortunately, those turnovers failed to produce as many baskets on the offensive end that the Firth fans wanted to see.
Meanwhile, when the Lady Huskies had possession of the ball, their big front line of Emily Trosen, Dakot Marshall and Nailee Harrigfeld simply controlled the offensive glass as they gave their team repeated attempts on the offensive end, leading to more than enough points for the win.
"We need to improve in all areas but especially in the rebounding area," Coach Cook said. "We gave up way too many second shots tonight but I was happy with the way that the girls played hard, all the way through the game despite getting down early."
Firth was led in the scoring column on the night by Kayla Jensen with 7 points while Rachel Schiess added 6 in the losing effort.
Firth will now play West Jefferson this evening at 6 p.m. in a loser out contest at South Fremont High School.
"West Jefferson is a good team, they pushed Butte to the wire tonight," Coach Cook said. "We will have to come out ready to play."
