Panthers complete season sweep of Russets
THOMAS — County foes collided for the second straight Saturday as the Shelley Russets and the Snake River Panthers butted heads on the soccer pitch. Snake River came into the contest looking for the season sweep of the Russets and after a three goal first half that is exactly what they got for their efforts as they shut out the visiting Russets 3-0.
"We were a little tired but everyone came out and played really hard today," Snake River head coach Trevor Peterson said. "I thought that we came out and made good passes, had some good runs, moved the ball well and finished the game hard."
Snake River got on the board in the thirteenth minute of play when Eric Gonzalez raced behind the Russet defenders, placing the ball into the left hand corner of the goal for the 1-0 advantage.
Fifteen minutes later his running mate on the front line, Isaac Martinez broke free for a pretty little goal and a 2-0 Snake River advantage.
"We have been working in practice with Eric and Isaac with making quick switches and they did that on that play which led to a goal," Coach Peterson said. "They both were making good runs and playing well with each other."
Gonzalez put the finishing touches on the scoring in the thirty-fourth minute when he made one of those strong runs and he outran the Russet defense and then slipped the ball past a diving Shelley goal keeper for the games final tally.
Shelley had several opportunities to cut into that deficit but Snake River's goal keeper, Morgan Smith was equal to the task on more than one occasion in the box for the Panthers.
"Morgan has progressed a lot this year," Coach Peterson said. "This is is first time playing soccer and he has picked it up well. He is doing just awesome and he played well today."
Snake River (2-9-2, 0-1-2) will step back into conference on Tuesday when they host Marsh Valley, a team whom they tied with earlier in the season.
Meanwhile, Shelley (0-11) will return to their home pitch on Tuesday as well when they tangle with Teton. Both games will follow the girls varsity matches at approximately 5:30 p.m.
