Panthers nip Cougars for third win in two days
Skylerr Valentine gets a take down on Jace Wilding during Thursday nights match up between the Panthers and the Cougars.
FIRTH — The Firth Cougars celebrated senior night but in the end it was the Snake River Panthers who picked up the duel win on Thursday evening as the Panthers won the cat fight 41-36.
"It was a tough match but I knew that it would be because Firth has a quality program," Snake River head coach Jeff Gardner said. "We had a couple of key matches to get the team win with Kaden Bench at 120 and Manny Trejo at 170."
Bench, who normally wrestles at 113 moved up to 120 for the Panthers on on Thursday evening and he came up aces with a hard fought 8-2 decision over Jackson Thompson.
Trejo, a first year wrestler for the Panthers gutted out a nail biter with Firth's Hagen Clemens, eventually picking up a hard fought 13-11 victory.
"Trejo's match came down to the wire and he gutted it out for the win and really, without it we probably lose this duel." Coach Gardner said.
Firth picked up 7 individual wins on the night, including a sweep of the top three weights as James Jolley, Brandon Uribe and Porter Jolley each picked up pins for the Cougars. A trio of forfeits hampered the Cougar effort however.
Snake River was coming off of a sweep of a conference tri-match with American Falls and Marsh Valley on Wednesday evening.
Snake River beat Marsh Valley 60-23 in the opening match as Cash Cardona and Colter Carter each picked up key wins in the win over the Eagles.
"Cash and Colter each had big wins over tough kids for us against Marsh," Coach Gardner said.
In the night cap, Snake River avenged a loss to heated rival American Falls with a hard fought 51-33 victory.
"They beat us a week before and I knew that we had a few key matches that we would have to turn around if we wanted to get a win," Coach Gardner said.
Snake River got those turn around matches from Braden Beard and Colter Carter who each picked up pins against ranked opponents at 145 and 182.
The key match of the night was Diego Maraz however with his win at 132.
"Diego was the clutch match of the night," Coach Gardner said. "He lost a controversial match last week at the buzzer but he stepped up big for us on Wednesday."
Both Snake River and Firth will be back in action at the Aberdeen tournament over the weekend.
