Panthers Roar in Opening Night Victory

August 25, 2012

Adrian Castaneda rumbles to day light during first half action against South Fremont on Friday night.

THOMAS — Wyatt Wray hit Bret Parkinson for a pair of touchdown passes and the Snake River Panthers opened defense of their 3A state title with a resounding 57-18 home win over South Fremont on Friday night.
"I told the kids before the game that if they did three things; no turnovers, no penalties and if they tackled that they would win and they took care of all three of them," Snake River head coach Jeff Dalley said. "I was happy with both sides of the ball. I thought that the kids played a good game."

In addition to the Wray to Parkinson connection Snake River also got a pair of defensive scores as Gio Pimentel stepped in front of a Junior Gonzalez pass early in the second quarter and then raced forty yards for the pick six and a 20-0 Panther advantage.
"Coach Toulouse is always telling us to just do our jobs and my job on that play was buzz which is the flat," Pimentel said. "He threw the ball into the flat and I was there to take it and who isn't going to run hard for a touchdown?"
South Fremont were able to cut into the deficit late in the first half when Gonzalez hit a streaking Cade Schaat for a thirty-five yard pitch and catch. Gonzalez finished the night with two touchdown tosses on an 8 for 28 passing night.
Snake River answered the Cougar score just over a minute later however when Wray hit Parkinson for a twenty-seven yard strike to push the lead out to 28-6 at the half.
"I thought that the line did a great job opening holes and protecting Wyatt tonight," Coach Dalley said. "We want to be a balanced team this year so teams can't just stack up against us and I'm happy with our balance tonight."
Snake River put the ball game on ice with a trio of third quarter touchdowns beginning with a forty-three yard fumble recovery for a score by Brad Coombs just over a minute into the second half. Pimentel followed with a four yard rushing score midway through the quarter and Adrian Castaneda, who led the Panthers with 96-yards rushing, capped the third quarter scoring with a fifty yard sprint to the end zone to put the Panthers up 49-6.
"Everybody got the job done on that play," Castaneda said. "The line executed and when I came around the corner it was an easy run to the end zone."
With the large lead the Panthers were able to empty their bench in the final frame and the young kids took advantage of the varsity playing time as Kade Keller hit Cole Hrabik for a 15-yard touchdown strike to put the icing on the Panther cake.
Snake River (1-0) will be on the road next week when they travel to Wyoming for a date with Star Valley beginning at 7 P.M.
