Panthers slay Dragons
Candon Watt goes up for 2 against Malad on Thursday night.
THOMAS — Snake River unveiled their basketball team on Thursday night and what a sight it was for the home crowd as the Panthers looked to be in mid season form with a 78-44 shellacking of the Malad Dragons.
"These kids are so unselfish," Snake River head coach Bob Coombs said. "I was really pleased with everybody tonight. It was a good start, I'm excited."
Snake River set the tone early in the first quarter of play as they dominated the glass, pulling down 11 rebounds to just 3 for the visitors. Those extra possessions were then cashed in by a stellar shooting performance as the Panthers drilled 3 triples in the quarter, including a pair by Candon Watt and a three ball from Martin Hrabik.
"Between Keegan, Candon, Braden and Martin I've got the guards because they can all step back and really shoot it," coach Coombs said.
Malad was able to tie the game at 20-20 moments into the second quarter but a 13-0 run by the Panthers gave Snake River a lead that was never threatened.
Three point baskets by Keegan Keller and Braden Watt keyed the run and heading into the locker room the Panthers led 40-29.
"We challenged the kids at half-time to keep Malad under 52-points and at the pace of the game I didn't think that they could do it but they came out and proved me wrong," coach Coombs said.
Out of the break Snake River accepted the defensive challenge from the coaching staff, holding the Dragons to just 15 second half points.
C.J. Toulouse and sophomore Jacoby Johnson showed off their considerable offensive skills in the third quarter as Toulouse reeled off 9-straight points to start the quarter and then Johnson hit a pair of treys for 6 of his 13-points in his varsity debut.
"It was a great game and a lot of fun," coach Coombs stated.
The mercy rule was enacted in the fourth quarter of play as Snake River sent their fans home happy in their season opener with a 34-point victory.
Snake River (1-0) will travel to Malad next Wednesday for their next game.
