ABERDEEN — The Aberdeen Tigers hosted Snake River in another installment of the highway 39 rivalry on Tuesday evening and by evenings end, it was the visiting Panthers who prevailed with a 60-45 victory.
The Panthers got off to about as good a start as one could have wanted as they sprinted to an 11-3 lead midway through the first quarter. That lead grew to double digits late in the second quarter when Cole Rushton dialed long distance for a 29-19 lead with just over two minutes remaining in the first half.
"We wanted to come in here and work on our defense tonight," Snake River head coach Bob Coombs said. "We are not where we want to be yet but we were a lot better tonight than we have been. Aberdeen runs a lot of slip screens and the kids did a good job of defending that tonight."
Out of half time Snake River opened with another run, this time a 10-3 burst which pushed the Panther lead to 43-24 and it looked as if the night was going to be a laugher.
Aberdeen had an answer however as Austin Horrocks drilled a trio of treys to close out the third quarter and heading to the fourth quarter, the Panther lead was just ten at 43-33.
"Offensively we were just fine," Aberdeen head coach Cory Hollingsworth said. "We got the game back within reach and then we just gave them way too many easy baskets. I think that we are capable of beating Snake River but it will take a much better effort than we showed tonight."
Indeed, Snake River were able to convert on several easy baskets to begin the fourth quarter as Nate Martin and Adrian Castaneda combined for the Panthers first 11 points of the fourth quarter which pushed the Panther lead out to 54-35.
"Those guys are both seniors and Nate was able to just out run Aberdeen on most of those," Coach Coombs said. "We'll take the win and move on."
Austin Horrocks led all scorers on the night with 16 for the Tigers while the Panthers placed a trio of players in double digits with Brad Coombs leading the charge with 13 points. Cole Rushton and Wyatt Wray each added 10 in the winning effort.
Aberdeen (2-4) will be off for the remainder of the year and will return to the court on January 2 when they host West Side.
Snake River (3-2) has some more work to do before their holiday break as they will host Blackfoot on Friday evening looking to even the season series with the Broncos.
