Richard “Dick” Brower, 86, of Blackfoot, Idaho passed away Thursday, August 30, 2012
at the VA Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah.
He was born September 20, 1925 in Blackfoot, Idaho the son of Stephen George Brower and Catherine Locke.
His 4th year of high school was interrupted because of World War II. He was called to serve his country and later received his GED, an accomplishment he was very proud of. During WWII he served in the Army Air Corp as a navigator in a B-17. He was stationed in Greenland and flew missions in Germany, France and one of the last missions was on D-day.
On August 7, 1947, he married Gladys Evelyn Sower in Blackfoot, Idaho. They were later sealed in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on August 8, 2009. Some of his fondest memories were made while dancing the night away with his “sweetheart”, Gladys.
He was a member of the Blackfoot 1st Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Dick would always greet everyone with a warm hand shake and a pleasant smile.
Dick’s greatest love, until his eyesight failed, was woodworking. He also enjoyed spending time at his cabin in Island Park, riding 4 wheelers and being in the outdoors. He enjoyed fishing on the Coffee Pot Rapids, hunting and gardening. Most of his favorite times were spent with his children, grandchildren and his wife.
One of Dick’s greatest accomplishments was the Veteran’s Memorial at the Blackfoot Court House which he designed and erected. He was honored with the Best Foot Forward Award by the Blackfoot Chamber of Commerce and was also awarded the Distinguished Citizenship Award by the Elk’s Lodge. He was also a long time member of the American Legion and always made sure every veteran received military honors.
Dick owned and operated a mechanic shop and later managed Starlite Bowling Alley where he was a Dick Webber Bowling Instructor. In 1967 went to work for the INEL and throughout his career was the recipient of various performance awards. He retired in 1991 after 34 years at the site.
He is survived by his wife, Gladys of Blackfoot; sons, Steven (Jaylene) Brower of West Jordan, UT, Rick (Cheri) Brower of Blackfoot, ID; brother, Wayne (Delora) Brower of Blackfoot, ID, and sisters, Dorothy (Douglas) Brown of Bountiful, UT. and Evelyn (Harold) Scalf of Pocatello, ID; 9 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Leon Brower and his wife, Vivian; and another brother Wesley Brower.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 5, 2012 at The Blackfoot 1st Ward LDS Church, 187 N. Ash Street in Blackfoot. Family will meet with friends and relatives from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 4, 2012 at Hawker Funeral Home, 132 South Shilling Avenue in Blackfoot and for one hour prior to services at the church.
