SHELLEY — The Shelley Lady Russets initial foray into the 4A High Country Conference continued on Tuesday night as they welcomed Rigby to town for a double dip on the diamond.
At the end of the evening, the visiting Lady Trojans proved to be the better team, as they came from behind for a 14-10 win in the first game and then pounded Shelley 18-6 in the nightcap.
"I wish that I could explain what happened to us tonight," Shelley head coach Chris Fleming said. "We started making errors in the field and then we just took it into every part of our game and lost our heads."
For most of the opening game it looked as if the Ladies in Red were well on their way to their first conference victory as a 4A squad.
Shelley jumped on top of Rigby with a 4 run first inning that featured a pair of RBI doubles, the first off the bat of Shelby Chapple who drove in Shateal Murphy with the first run of the game and the second by Corbin VanLeuven who drove in Kayla Settle and Chapple. VanLeuven later scored on a RBI single by Sheila Alderson and Shelley was rolling.
"In that first game we were crushing the ball, hitting doubles like there was nothing to it," coach Fleming said.
Shelley eventually built a 8-4 lead over Rigby but in the top of the sixth the tides turned against the Lady Russets.
After a lead off single by the Trojans the eighth hitter in the line up strode to the plate. After working the count full Ally Southhoff then got a pitch that she liked and deposited it over the left field fence for a 2-run dinger. The next hitter then reached on an error and all momentum switched to the Trojan dugout as they reeled off 4 more runs in the inning, all of which were unearned as they erased the Russet lead and stole game one.
"A couple of simple plays that we should have made and a couple of innings in which we had to made five outs to get three," coach Fleming said. "It's one thing to get beat but it's another thing to go out there and beat ourselves."
The disappointing finish of the first game spilled over into the second game as Shelley committed 5 errors in the first two innings of play, spotting the Trojans a 8-2 lead that eventually became the 18-6 final in just five innings of play.
Shelley (3-7, 0-4) will look to get the bad taste out of their mouths when they travel to Malad on Friday where they will play American Falls at 11 A.M. and then Malad at 2:30 P.M.
