Russets dominate Buhl 60-7
POCATELLO — Dominant. That is the word that best describes the performance that the Shelley Russet football squad had on Saturday evening against a woefully overmatched Buhl opponent in their 60-7 opening round win over the Indians.
"We're a pretty aggressive football team and it paid off tonight," Shelley head coach Travis Hobson said. "Honestly on film Buhl looked real good so we were able to show the kids some film and show them some good things that they could do now as coaches we saw some things that we thought that we could exploit. I thought that Buhl was aggressive to a point where we could screen and I didn't think that they could cover our deep ball and in their cover three I felt that we could hit them up the sea
Those lessons learned in the film room certainly paid off in spades as the defensive unit simply devastated the Buhl offense, holding them to just 56 total yards, 55 of those coming on the games final drive.
"Our defense is good, I've been saying that all year," Coach Hobson said.
Offensively, the Russets took advantage of all of their mismatches as they rolled up 44 first half points while out gaining the Indians 306 to -22 in the first half.
Chad Leckington had a field day with 11 of 15 passing and four touchdown tosses.
With the big lead it was time to run in the back ups and they were equally as impressive as they continued to light up the score board with their time in the sun.
"It's hard. On the headset with the coaches it dominated the conversation. How do you balance the playing time for the kids that they need and that they deserve. It's a balance that is very delicate and I hope people don't see us as running up the score or anything like that," Coach Hobson said.
With the win Shelley (9-0) advances to next Friday nights showdown with cross county rival Snake River.
"Snake River is a good football team. It's not going to be hard to get kids up for it. Let's be honest, the Shelley-Snake relationship is not lovey-dovey or hugs and kisses," Coach Hobson said. "They don't like us and we don't like them. They're a good football team. They're well coached. It will be a fun week of practice."
Kick off for that game is scheduled for 8 p.m. in Holt Arena.
