Aaron "AA battery" Adams looks for the end zone as Blackfoots Beau Hoskins closes in for the tackle during Shelley's 22-21 win over Blackfoot on Friday night.
SHELLEY — Aaron Adams simply would not be denied. With under a minute remaining in the fourth quarter Adams carried the ball twice from the three yard line. The first time for a touchdown. The second for a go ahead 2-point conversion, lifting the Russets to a thrilling 22-21 conference victory over the Blackfoot Broncos.
"I said we're running slot left, twenty-one counter dive reverse and we're scoring the blank word." Shelley head coach Dave Hadley said. "We believed in ourselves, trusted in each other and wow, that was awesome."
Blackfoot opened the evening by taking the opening kick off and then driving the length of the field on a drive that spanned 8 minutes on the game clock, finishing with a 1-yard touchdown plunge by Garrett Buck.
Shelley responded with a tying drive of their own early in the second quarter, as Adams pounded into the end zone from 6-yards out.
Blackfoot regained the lead with 1:31 remaining in the first half as Alonzo Ramos sprinted into the end zone from 9-yards out and after a Luis Osequera extra point Blackfoot led 14-7 heading into the break.
Blackfoot then stretched the lead to 21-7 when Trae Pilster hit Beau Hoskins on a 26-yard touchdown strike with 1:27 remaining in the third quarter.
That is when the wheels fell off the bus for the Broncos however as the Broncos turned over the ball three times in the fourth quarter.
"We did a lot of good things but we played the worst that we could have played for the last ten minutes." Blackfoot head coach Stan Buck said. "The funny thing is that they were coached before they made the bad play and that is what really upsets me. They were trying to do too much. We talk about not hurting ourselves and we hurt ourselves tonight and that was really bad. Hopefully they will learn from this."
Indeed mistakes lent a hand in the Broncos demise the first of which was a critical interception deep in Russet territory.
With Blackfoot threatening to blow the game open, Tate Foster stepped in front of a Pilster pass for the pick, turning the Broncos away at the 15-yard line.
Blackfoot's defense was equal to the task however, forcing a punt but then turnover two reared it's ugly head as the ball caromed off Hoskins hands giving the Russets new life with the ball on the Bronco 29-yard line.
Two minutes later Chad Leckington hit Allen Messick on a 25-yard strike over the middle pulling the Russets to within 21-14.
Still with the lead Blackfoot went back to work on the offensive end only to see tragedy strike on the Bronco sideline when Kyle Killpack picked off Pilster setting up the Russets at midfield with 4:02 remaining.
With the win in their sights, Shelley went to their bread and butter, feeding the AA battery the ball eventually leading to the winning scores. Adams finished the evening with 171 yards on 23 carries.
"Against Hillcrest I thought that we got tentative. Against Aspen I thought that we got tentative but tonight the kids just believed in themselves and trusted each other and gave maximum effort and when you give maximum effort things will work out." coach Hadley said. "Thank the good lord for that two-point conversion."
Blackfoot did get a final shot at pulling out the win, working the ball down the field over the last forty seconds of play setting up a 41-yard field goal attempt by Oseguera.
"They kept running those out routes and I just thought that these kids deserve to win this and I just thought it can't come down to this and have heart break like that." coach Hadley said.
The kick was definately long enough off the foot of Oseguera but the ball faded just left sending the Russets into celebration mode.
"We always play hard we just do some dumb things sometimes. Even when we make mistakes we are still playing hard but they are not smart." coach Buck said. "We can still tie for the conference by winning next week and we'll find out what kind of kids we are. Like I told them we can be 15 year olds or we can grow up."
Indeed both teams have a shot at the conference with a Blackfoot win over Hillcrest next Friday and a Shelley win over Rigby. Both games will be at home with kick off slated for 7 P.M.
