April 2, 2014

Shelley’s Kaden Schmitt looks down after leaping for a throw down to second base while a Soda Springs runner slides into second base during their game at Shelley High School on Wednesday.

SHELLEY — Prior to Shelley's game with Soda Springs on Wednesday head coach Trent Armstrong told his team one thing, be aggressive.
But after finding themselves in a 3-0 hole after an inning and a half Armstrong wondered if his team was listening.
They were.
The Russets exploded for 14 runs over the next four innings including a six-run fourth inning on the way to a 14-4, five inning win over the Cardinals at Shelley High School on Wednesday.

"When our bats show up like they did today we are pretty tough to beat," Armstrong said. "We swung the bats well and played good defense and got us a victory."
After giving up a run in the first and two in the second, the Russets needed to find a way to get to Soda Springs starter Kayd Mumford.
Patience at the plate was what eventually did it for the Russets.
After a groundout to start the second, the Russets drew back-to-back walks to set the table for Marcus Gustaveson.
Gustaveson blooped a single to left field driving on Stockton Stohl.
Zack Leal scored on a passed ball and two batters latter Braxton Smith singled to drive home Gustaveson to tie the game at 3-3.
Back-to-back hit batters with one out in the third inning where the keys to a four-run inning.
Leal had the innings big hit with a two-RBI single to left field driving home Colt Johnson and Tyler Bean.
After singling, Stohl scored on a passed ball and Billy Butler capped off the inning with a bloop RBI single to right driving home Leal.
IN the six-run fourth the Russets recorded four hits, three of them drove home runs. Leal and Smith each had two-RBI singles and Stohl added another RBI single as the Russets bats continued their hot hitting.
The Russets ended the game in the fifth when Josh Peterson came home to score on an attempted pick off attempt at third base by Soda catcher Dillyn Deno.
Leal led the Russets at the plate going 2-for-2 with four RBI. Smith added another two hits and three RBI.
