Russets tame Wildcats 66-52
MERIDIAN – The Shelley Russets slowed down a very quick Filer Wildcat team and then got a game high 19 points from sophomore sharpshooter Tyler Fredrickson as they advanced to today’s 3A state title game with a convincing 66-52 victory on Friday evening.
“I’m so proud of my kids,” Shelley head coach Dave Hadley said. “All day long and deservedly so, all we heard was how good Filer was. Our kids are battlers, they’re gamers and they came out and didn’t play afraid. They came out and played bold which is what we talked about in the locker room and tonight we just went out and played and I’m so happy for them.”
Indeed the Wildcats were very impressive in their opening round victory over Sugar-Salem as a trio of guards played havoc with the Diggers. On Friday evening Shelley was equal to the task as they held the Wildcats to just 22% from behind the arc as Shelley outscored the Wildcats in each of the four quarters of play.
“I thought that we got out on shooters extremely well and even the shots that they made I felt that we did a good job of contesting those,” Coach Hadley said. “When we did press we really weren’t looking for turnovers just making them work and slowing them down and I thought that was real effective, especially in the first half because they didn’t attack us quite as much as they like to normally attack and consequently we were able to get the tempo going the way that we wanted.”
Fredrickson was a perfect 3 of 3 from behind the arc for his 19 point evening and he was joined in the double digit point column by McKay Cannon who had 14 points and Chad Leckington who notched 10.
Dalton Nelson was active underneath with several lay ups for 8 points in the winning effort.
“I was really happy with our organization on the offensive end,” coach Hadley said. “In the third quarter we got a couple of baskets from Dalton Nelson where they tried to pick us up three quarter and we were able to get deep penetration through their defense where Dalton got a bucket and then a bucket with the foul and I felt that those plays changed the whole confidence level of our team in that they couldn’t get out and pressure us anymore.”
Shelley made a living at the free throw line as they converted on 22 of 30 charity tosses as they closed out Filer from the free throw line to advance to today’s showdown with Snake River for the 3A state championship.
“We are two evenly matched teams, I think that we know each other real well and so it will be a matter of going out, executing and you know what, we have a chance and that’s all you can ask for,” Coach Hadley said.
The Russets will take their chances with the Panthers at the Idaho Center in Nampa with tip off scheduled for 3:50 p.m.
