BLACKFOOT â€” Over the last week the Shelley Russets have put on quite the offensive show.
After winning the Buhl Tournament last weekend where they won all four games they played outscoring their opponents 47-12, the Russets defeated Teton and Sugar-Salem earlier this week to open district play.
Saturday the Russets traveled down Highway 91 to take on the Blackfoot Broncos and if you were a fan of offense Blackfoot High School was the place to be.
Shelley scored all 12 of their runs in the third fourth and fifth innings, then had to hold off a let Blackfoot rally to earn a 12-8 win on what was by far the best weather day of the season thus far.
"We have been hitting the cover off the ball" Shelley head coach Trent Armstrong said. "Today we continued to hit the ball and play solid defense.
Blackfoot got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second inning.
After a ground out to start the inning, Taylor Pearson singled and moved to second on an error. Russell Osborn walked, two pitches later Dallin Fairchild ripped a double to left center field driving in Pearson and Osborn.
Fairchild would singlehandedly try to be all of the Broncos offense on the day.
Shelley's offense got going in the third when they got four consecutive hits to start the inning.
After Braxton Smith singled and stole second, Josh Peterson doubled to left center to score Smith. Peterson scored on a single by Tyler Bean.
But the Russets rally came to an end on a double play turned by the Broncos Pacen Hayes and a ground out.
The Russets offense really took over in the top of the third.
Shelley sent 11 hitters to the plate, record gin six hits and scoring seven runs to blow the game open building an 9-3 lead.
Shelley opened the inning with four consecutive singles, the last by Peterson drove home a run. Blake Butler scored on a wild pitch and Smith scored on an error.
Johnson and Stohl each recorded two-RBI hits to finish out the inning.
The Russets added three more runs in the fifth one just one hit, as the Broncos pitchers issued three walks, one with the bases loaded and an error to plate three runs for Shelley.
But trailing 12-3, Blackfoot was not going to just roll over and let Shelley win the game, they battled back.
After a walk and an error, the Broncos had runners on the corners with one out.
Fairchild drove home Pearson who walked with a ground ball to first. And Osborn scored on an error to cut the Broncos deficit to 12-5.
Blackfoot got three more runs in the sixth on an RBI single from Hayes and a two-RBI double from Fairchild, but the Broncos comeback ended with no further runs scoring.
Fairchild finished the day 2-for-4 with five RBI to lead Blackfoot. Zack Later and Hayes each added two hits.
Peterson went 4-for-5 with three RBI to lead Shelley. Johnson went 1-for-4 with three RBI.
Shelley has won seven consecutive games after Saturday's win.
Shelley travels to South Fremont on Tuesday, while Blackfoot hosts Skyline.
