Ruth Marcum, 89, of Rexburg and formerly of Blackfoot passed away Monday, Sept. 9, 2013 at her home surrounded by her family.
She was born in Victor on March 8, 1924 to Ulysses Grant Daniels and Delilah Wardle Daniels.
Â She was raised and attended school in Victor and Jackson Hole, Wyo.Â She graduated from Victor High School, attended Ricks College and Idaho State University receiving her bachelorâ€™s degree in Elementary Education.Â She taught school in Teton Valley and the Snake River School District for 25 years.
Â Ruth met her future husband, Laverne Marcum, at Ricks College and they were married in the Logan, Utah LDS Temple on July 16, 1942.Â They had 71 wonderful years together.Â To this union were born six children.
Â Ruth was active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held positions in the ward and stake Young Womenâ€™s organizations for several years.Â She enjoyed working with the young people.Â She served as Relief Society president and worked in the St. George, Utah LDS Temple.Â She served a mission in St. George with her husband at the Temple Visitorsâ€™ Center and historical sites.Â Also, she served a calling with the Sunbird Missionaries and at Family History Center, both in Rexburg.Â Above all else, she was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
Â She was active in so many things and loved life and lived it fully.Â She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, oil painting, golfing, fishing, traveling in their fifth wheel and cooking.Â She loved attending high school sporting events.Â She provided a baby shawl to all the first grandchildren born to each couple until diminished eyesight didnâ€™t allow her to continue in her later years.Â She knitted sweaters for all her children and their spouses and gave afghans to every grandchild at the time of their marriage.Â She enjoyed their home in Island Park, where she took up golfing and fishing.Â Ruth enjoyed traveling as long as she had a place to sleep, a bathroom and a place to cook...their fifth wheel trailer met this criteria.Â They, along with friends, enjoyed traveling to many places in the United States and Canada.
Â She is survived by her husband, Laverne of Rexburg; and five children, Nancy Marcum of Phoenix, Ariz.; Robert (Janene) Marcum of Rexburg; Susan (Greg) Kjar of Bountiful, Utah; Pamela (Marc) Eynon of Huntington Beach, Calif.; Kathy (John) Beal of Chubbuck and Kevin (Gena) Marcum of Bainbridge Island, Wash.Â She has been blessed with 30 grandchildren and 70 great-grandchildren.
Â She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Ray; a brother, Grant Daniels; and a granddaughter, Julia Eynon; a great-granddaughter, Andee Rae Jones; and a great- grandson, Kyler Jackson.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013 at the Rexburg Idaho East Stake Center, 387 S 4th E in Rexburg.Â The family will meet with friends and family on Friday from 6-8 p.m. at Hawker Funeral Home, 132 S. Shilling Avenue in Blackfoot and for one hour prior to the service at the stake center in Rexburg.Â Interment will be at 3 p.m. at the Moreland Cemetery.Â
