Salvador S. Hernandez, 86

Salvador S. “Savior” Hernandez, 86, of Blackfoot, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 23, 2011, at the Idaho State Veterans Home in Pocatello surrounded by family.
He was born Sept. 2, 1924, in Blackfoot, the son of Nicholas and Rosario Hernandez.
He grew up in Blackfoot and attended school at St. Margaret’s Catholic School in Blackfoot. In 1944 he joined the US Army and served in the South Pacific during World War II, where he was wounded in action. He received the Purple Heart Award and was honorably discharged in 1946.
He returned home to his love, Helen Pohl and they were married Nov. 21, 1945.
He worked as a welder for most of his working career, retiring from Partner’s Steel in Pocatello in 1990.
He enjoyed rodeo and was known for his talent of riding bulls. He won at the War Bonnet Round-up in Idaho Falls and Blackfoot Rodeo in Blackfoot. He was a proud member of the Rodeo Cowboys Association.
He is survived by his son, Jimmy (Kathy) Hernandez of Blackfoot; daughters, Lynne Fowler, Anita (Kirk) Isaacs, and Annette (Bret) Davis all of Blackfoot; brothers, Richard and Nick Hernandez; sisters, Espie, Margarite, Mary, Theresa, Delores, Ester and Angela; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Helen; son, Terry Hernandez; daughter, Stephanie Gustaveson; grandson, Nicholas Hernandez, and brothers, Marcel, John, Joe, Toney, Pete, and Tommie.
A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m.Thursday, April 28, 2011, at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church.
A Rosary service will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 27, 2011, with a viewing after the Rosary until 9 p.m. at Hawker Funeral Home, 132 S. Shilling Ave., Blackfoot.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Idaho State Veteran’s Home, 1957 Alvin Ricken Dr., Pocatello, Idaho 83201 or to St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, 585 W. Sexton St., Blackfoot, Idaho 83221.
Interment will be at 4 p.m. following the services at the Grove City Cemetery.
