Principal Gary Larsen, right, points out the area where the gymnasium will be to Crop Production Services Crop Specialist Leon Anderson. Construction on the permanent Idaho Science and Technology Charter School building is underway, and Crop Production Services is helping with landscaping.
BLACKFOOT — While students at the Idaho Science and Technology Charter School will have a permanent school building next year, they will also get to enjoy grass and trees thanks to donations from a local business and area organizations.
The new school building is being constructed behind the existing school, which currently consists of modular buildings. The new school will have 11 classrooms, including a music room, media room, technology lab and a gymnasium. Now it will also have grass and trees.
Two local Master Gardeners offered to determine which plants and grasses will grow best at the school. They will then design a landscaping plan for the school.
Crop Production Services has donated time, seed and herbicide to the school. They sprayed the weeds prior to the start of construction on the new school and will donate and plant grass seed around the school for the children to enjoy. The Blackfoot Community Center, which received a donation of trees, has donated the trees to the school. Crop Production Services will also plant the trees.
“We’re excited to be able to help these guys,” Crop Consultant Leon Anderson said.
Idaho Science and Technology Charter School Principal Gary Larsen said while they had planned for the construction of a new school, landscaping was not a part of that plan.
Now the students will be able to enjoy their new school, which will open early next year, and they will have grass to play on.
Anderson said Crop Production Services will likely work with the charter school for a few years to complete the landscaping project.
“They’re a good part of the community and a big help to us,” Larsen said.
ISTCS opened last year with just over 100 students. The new school building is expected to open in January.
