Scouts freshen paint on city's Army tanks

June 27, 2014

Morning News — Bob Hudson Members of Boy Scout Troop 209 paint one of the tanks at Veterans Memorial Park as Cameron Hansen's Eagle Scout project. Among those involved on Friday include Hansen (with clipboard) and (from left) Jacob Cox, Jordan Gardner, Rocky Hansen, Alec Kress, Ken Opheikens and Jay Graham.

The two tanks on display at Veterans Memorial Park near the Blackfoot Airport are getting new paint jobs.
Cameron Hansen of Boy Scout Troop 209, friends and family were on the job Friday, covering the historic vehicles with olive drab after putting on primer a week ago.
"This started when my dad told me to call the city and ask if they had any suggestions for Eagle projects," Hansen said.
"They told me the tanks need repainted," he said. "That sounded pretty interesting."
Blackfoot Paint and Glass donated the paint and related materials and Pro Rentals donated the sprayer. Hansen, his friends and family donated other necessary materials.
Among the participants in the project were two leaders, six scouts from Troop 209, two other scouts and one young lady. They included Cameron's parents, Rocky and Regina Hansen; Heidi Graham and her son Jay; Joe Adakai, Jacob Cox, Ivan Cox, Alec Kress, Jordan Gardner, Melinda Gardner, Ken Opheikens and Kaye Olsen.
Hansen said he didn't know the history of the tanks, one of which was from the Vietnam era and other from World War II. He suggested that another scout might learn the history from former Mayor Scott Reese and place plaques with that information on or near the vehicles.
