Shelley to conduct Spud Day festivities today
Shelley celebrates Spud Day today
SHELLEY — The 83rd annual Idaho Spud Day in Shelley is today. This year's theme is "All Buttered Up."
Activities begin with a parade down State Street beginning at 9:45 a.m. Highlights of the day include the Spud Tug at 3 p.m., free potatoes served at noon, the World Champion Potato Picking Contests and performances on the free park stage, all at Shelley City Park/Dawn Lloyd Field.
At noon, just under 7,000 free baked potatoes will be served complete with butter, sour cream and cheese. Potatoes are provided by GPOD and Basic American. The kitchen staffs at Shelley and Firth high schools bake the spuds.
In spud picking contests, men and women vie for world championship titles that are defended each year. Kids also compete in various age groups.
Five of Shelley's citizens organized the first Idaho Spud Day in the summer of 1927. That year, the crowd was estimated at 10,000. It was noted 1,400 cars were counted parked on the streets and alleys. Potatoes were provided by the local farmers.
