Shelley drops opener to Homedale

March 7, 2014

Shelley’s Tyler Fredrickson drives to the basket while a Homedale defender stands in his way during their 3A state tournament game at Meridian High School on Thursday.

MERIDIAN — The hope of a District 5 state champion was baked not long after halftime in the final game of the opening round of the Class 3A boys basketball tournament, as Shelley joined conference rival Sugar-Salem in the consolation bracket.

The Russets lost 53-38 to the Homedale Trojans Thursday, setting up a rematch with District 6 rival Snake River. Shelley was within a basket of the Trojans at the half, but a 13-6 third quarter put the Russets at a deficit they did not overcome. A primary problem: the Russets couldn't make shots fall, hitting just 24.6 percent from the field.

"You don't win a lot of basketball games with 24 percent," said Shelley head coach Dave Hadley. "I thought we got good looks, they just didn't go down."

The Russets also began struggling on defense in the latter half when Homedale switched to a 1-3-1 halfcourt scheme against which Shelley couldn't adjust, according to Hadley. Shelley turned the ball over nine times, with seven of those tallied as Homedale steals.

Also, although they grabbed as many boards as the Trojans, rebounding was another problem area for the Russets. They couldn't get enough of their own boards to convert to second-chance points, allowing Homedale to fare better in that category, notching 12 points to Shelley's 6.

It was a dramatic shift from the first half, which saw Shelley jump to a 14-7 lead after one quarter.

"The first half we did a decent job, but in the second we started scrambling," said guard Carter Cannon (7 points, 8 rebounds). "We got out of position."

The Russets and Panthers are no strangers to each other, as Shelly picked up two victories against the rival during the regular season. Today's 3 p.m. contest will determine who gets to play for a trophy on Saturday.

"Great game both times," said Shelley forward Keifer Higham (13 points). "We've got to stay hungry. It was tough on us (Thursday), but we have to regroup."
