Shelley girls edge Blackfoot, 46-43

January 25, 2012

For the Morning News — Kasey Jonas Blackfoot's Kylie Coby (23) chases a loose ball after Shelley's Kimber Call (1) knocked it away during Tuesday's High Country Conference game. The Broncos' Boo Burnett (13) and the Russets' Jessalyn Hobbs (32) are watching the play.

SHELLEY — Senior night was a sweet success for the Shelley Lady Russets Tuesday night as they defeated Blackfoot 46-43 in High Country Conference play on Tuesday.
“This was a very rewarding game for the seniors and possibly for our last home game,” Shelley coach Burke Davis said, “They are a special class of seniors. They established tradition and left examples for the younger classes.”
The Broncos (1-14, 1-8 HCC) held the lead for the majority of the game and at the start of the fourth quarter. The Russets (6-14, 1-10) held the Broncos to only seven points in the final quarter while scoring 20 points, Sam Orme's basket put the Russets ahead 44-43 with 1:45 left. Orme added then added two more points with only eight seconds left for the final margin.
“I think Sam Orme owned it on the free throw line,” Burke said.
Shelley’s top scorer of the night was senior Shannika Geary with 14 points.
“Shannika Geary played her best game all year tonight.” Burke said.
Blackfoot played an aggressive game but struggled toward the end of the game. Senior Cerissa Honena was Blackfoot’s top scorer with 15 points, all 3-pointers. Dusti Rodriquez finished the night with 10 points.
“They played hard. We tried new combinations but I would have liked to get a few more girls in there. And once again we were in foul trouble,” Blackfoot’s coach Merle Smith said. “The hardest thing that we are working on is how to finish the game. We had them and then they like tightened up.”
The Lady Russets will play at Idaho Falls Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
“We have been in a situation like this before, but we didn’t settle for anything less than a win tonight,” Burke said.
Blackfoot plays Thursday at home against Rigby at 7:30 p.m.
“They are still working on getting confidence and believing in themselves and their shots,” Smith said.
