SHELLEY — One hundred fifty-six Shelley graduates received a rousing send-off Tuesday evening at their graduation ceremony.
The Class of 2011 earned scholarships and awards totaling more than $900,000.
Addressing her classmates, valedictorian Wendee Morgan said, “Stop worrying about filling someone else’s shoes, just fill your own.”
She continued, “As Abraham Lincoln said, ‘Whatever you are, be a good one.’”
As valedictorian Kemais Ehlers related the incident that when he was 4 years old, he had climbed onto the counter to get some toothpicks.
“Having stretched to achieve my goal, I didn’t notice one toothpick was caught spear-like in the carpet,” Ehlers said. “I jumped to discover the toothpick was driven into my foot.
“After trying to get it out, I hobbled with my bloody foot to my mother,” he said. “The toothpick came out quickly with pliers but not without pain.
“So graduates, we’ve stretched ourselves to get to this point,” Ehlers said. “We need to consider where we are venturing so that in pursuing our short-term goals we do not forget our life-long ambitions.”
Shelley school board member Loren Lund encouraged the graduates to continue their educations.
Lund quoted Albert Einstein when he stated, “Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop learning.
“You can make choices but you cannot choose the consequences,” Lund said.
Lund cited five keys to success. These are:
* Be passionate.
* Be prepared.
* Be courageous.
* Have integrity.
* Be compassionate.
Take time to reflect on your experiences, Lund advised.
Again quoting Einstein, Lund said, “Use your imagination. Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new and finally, we cannot solve problems by using the same knowledge that got us into the problem.”
