Shelley rolls over West Jordan, Utah, 28-6

August 31, 2013

Morning News — Jason Enes Shelley's Cameron Waite heads upfield against a defender from West Jordan, Utah, on Friday night.

It was not the start the defending 3A state champion Shelley Russets wanted, but the end result turned out to be just what the Russet faithful wanted.
After surrendering a 65-yard touchdown in the third play of the game the Russets outscored visiting West Jordan 28-0 to earn a 28-6 win in the second game of the Rocky Mountain Rumble Friday in Holt Arena.
After shutting down the Jaguars on the first two offensive plays of the game, West Jordan quarterback Colton Mickelson found a wide open Chandler Frischknect who beat the Shelley secondary for a 65-yard touchdown.
The Russets first offensive series did not start well as the team was unable to capitalize on a fourth and two deep in West Jordan territory and turned the ball over on downs.
After forcing a Cougars turnover on downs on the next possession the Russets got a drive going marching the ball all the way down to the Cougars 23 yard line.
But on a third and two Russets quarterback Kaden Schmitt forced a pass that was intercepted by West Jordan’s Tyler Seewer.
Taylor Lund got the Russets defense going again when he intercepted a Mickelson pass on the first play of the second quarter.
Three minutes later Lund got the Russets on the board when he hauled in a 6-yard touchdown pass from Schmitt. After the PAT the Russets led 7-6.
Shelley added three more touchdowns, one a 74-yard completion to Josh Peterson to earn the win.
Shelley hosts Jerome next Friday.
