Stone Soup fundraiser scheduled for Tuesday
Stone Soup is an ancient myth about how a delicious soup, starting with nothing but a stone, can be made when everyone makes a small contribution of something good to the soup. The myth, and the community spirit of everyone pitching in, lives on in the 9th annual Stone Soup cook-off, a fundraiser to help raise money for Blackfoot's South Eastern Idaho Community Action Agency (SEICCA).
Bingham County SEICCA outreach manager Bobette Beesley said, "This fundraiser is a fun and competitive soup contest giving amateur and professional cooks, from local businesses and church groups, a chance to cook up their tastiest pot of soup to share with the community for a great cause." The money raised from Stone Soup will go directly to SEICCA in Bingham County to help those in need with energy, rent and food assistance. SEICCA also helps pay test fees for those in need who are earning their GED.
Beesley said 14 different soups will be dished out at the cook-off this year, with the addition of Tommy Vaughn's, Basic American Foods and Rockford Cafe joining in the fun this year. Those returning to the cook-off the this year include Rupe's Burgers, Melina's, Downtown Bread, Martha's Cafe, Kesler's Market, Bingham Memorial Hospital, The Willows, Kathy & Co., Flower Shoppe, Bible Discovery Center and Baha'i Community.
Beesley said the event will be emceed by Charley Hopkins, the voice of Blackfoot High School Bronco football. There will be live entertainment by the Blackfoot Chamber Singers, a raffle, silent auction and a free children's carnival.
The Stone Soup cook-off will be Tuesday at Mountain View Middle School, 645 Mitchell Lane, starting at 5:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the Blackfoot Chamber of Commerce at 130 NW Main Street. Advance tickets are $6 per person or $25 per family. Tickets at the door are $7 per person or $30 per family.
Beesley said an admission ticket gives you a chance to taste all of the soups and vote your favorite. The soup winners will be announced at 7:45 p.m.
