POCATELLO — The second go of the 2012 State High School Rodeo went into the books after the morning performance at Bannock County Fairgrounds on Thursday.
Local fourth district athletes are fairing quite well halfway into the prestigious event with several in line for shots at state titles.
In the bareback event, Skylerr Valentine won the second go with a 74 point ride, giving him 138 on two head. Cooper Clemens was third in the second go with a 69 point ride which puts him at 139 on two head. That along with his carried points give him the overall lead as they headed into the third go on Thursday evening.
Thursday evening, Valentine once again put on a show as he turned in a 70 point ride, giving him 208 points after covering all three head that he drew which guarantees the Snake River soon to be senior a spot in Saturday's final.
In the pole bending a trio of local cowgirls finished in the top ten of the second go with Kassidy Duffin finishing third, Cassidy Quinn finishing fourth and Kimberlyn Fehringer finishing sixth. Overall Duffin sits in second place after the first two goes.
Duffin and Fehringer each took to the arena floor on Thursday evening with Duffin turning in another blazing fast run, in fact the fastest of the evening with a time of 21.067. Fehringer was also quick with a time of 21.838.
Cooper Clemens was a force once again in the steer wrestling as his 4.73 second go time was good enough for fifth in the go, leaving him in a tie for fourth entering the third go. Will Chappell also cracked the top ten in the second go.
Both cowboys will run their third go this morning during the morning session of the rodeo.
In the goat tying, Crissey Tysor was the lone fourth district cowgirl to crack the top ten as she finished sixth in the second go. Thursday evening she helped her cause for a spot in Saturday's finals with a fifth fastest time of 9.84.
The breakaway roping field is extremely tight as hundredths of a second separate the top cowgirls. Kimberlyn Fehringer and Lyndsie Ekstrom each cracked the top ten in the second go with Fehringer in fifth and Ekstrom in tenth.
None of those fourth district cowgirls ran on Thursday evening but Snake River's Carsey Kofford was in the house as she turned in the second fastest time of the evening with a smoking 3.10 second run.
Tie down roping was a nice event for fourth district cowboys as McCray Foster and Rylie Clemens each worked their way into the top ten of the second go in seventh and tenth respectfully.
In the barrel racing a trio of fourth district cowgirls turned in smoking hot times with Fehringer finishing second, Ekstrom third and Ciarra Driscoll in fifth in the second go.
A pair of fourth district cowboys sat atop the second go leader board with Kolton Hanson sitting in first with a 74 and Zane Stephenson in second place with his 72 point ride.
Hanson rode his third go bull on Thursday evening but results were too late for the deadline while Zane Stephenson will round mount his third go bull tonight in the evening performance.
