Tobey, Clarke combine for 44 in Broncos win over Bees

Blackfoot’s Morningrose Tobey drives to the basket against Bonneville’s Haylie Keck during their game at Blackfoot High School Thursday night.

BLACKFOOT — Morningrose Tobey and Cassandra Clarke combined to score 44 points as Blackfoot earned a big 4A District 5/6 win over Bonneville 56-42 Thursday night at Blackfoot High School.
Tobey, who was celebrating her 17th birthday Thursday was the spark plug for the Broncos on both ends of the floor, while Clarke continued her aggressive play from the last few games.

"We are really starting to come together," Blackfoot head coach Merle Smith said. "This was a big game for us and it helps to set the tone for the remainder of the season. We are locked into a top four seed for districts, but I want to improve at least one more spot."
The Broncos started the game slowly as some ill advised passes and some missed layups allowed a pesky Bees squad to stay in the game.
When the Broncos came out of the locker room for the third quarter the team cranked up the intensity and feed the ball to Madison Leslie in the low post.
"We got refocused at halftime and came out aggressive and played our style of game," Smith said. "We got Madison going inside and she went up aggressive to the basket and she made some baskets."
In that second half the Broncos also applied the full court press and the Bees struggled to find ways to break it.
"Our defense was good tonight, we pressed, and when they did get shots off we got rebounds that allowed us to run our transition game," Smith said. "We really needed to come out and play well and get some momentum going for the last two games of the season."
But the story of the night was Tobey and Clarke.
Tobey finished her birthday night game with a double-double making basket both inside and outside the three point arc.
Clarke did most of her damage on the drive to the basket.
Clarke was aggressive from the opening tip carving her way through the Bees defense putting defenders in foul trouble while driving to the basket.
Clarke scored 12 of her 20 points in the second half.
"We need to continue to get our legs under us and take it one game at a time," Smith said. "We have big game with Poky on Tuesday, we need to have good practices and focus on them."
Blackfoot (8-10, 4-4) travel to Pocatello on Tuesday.
