Tobey powers Blackfoot to 3-0 win over Skyline

March 19, 2013

Sami MacFee makes the play at second during Blackfoot's fifth straight win to open the season on Tuesday evening.

BLACKFOOT — The Blackfoot Lady Broncos got a pair of solo home runs by Morningrose Tobey as they kept their season record unblemished in a 3-0 win over the visiting 5A Skyline Lady Grizzlies on Tuesday afternoon. In what was listed as a double header on the schedule, the teams wound up playing just one game and in a classic pitchers duel, it was Tobey and the rest of the Lady Broncos who were the victors.
"It was a tough game," Blackfoot head coach Matt Chavez said. "The pitching for both teams was just fantastic and we were able to get a couple of key hits. Morningrose definitely helped herself out and defensively we got the job done."

Tobey toed the rubber against Sam Christensen and the two mirrored each other with near identical pitching lines. Tobey worked the complete seven innings and scattered 4 hits, walked two and struck out 10 in the win. Christensen allowed 5 hits and also walked just two while striking out 10 but of the five hits, two of those were home runs.
"I'm just so proud of the girls," coach Chavez said. "Defensively we are just solid all over the field. It's like coaching a traveling team but instead of picking the cream of the crop from several different schools I'm lucky enough to have all of that talent here at Blackfoot. The game is really fun when your not nervous about making errors and each of these girls has the confidence to make the plays in the field."
With no errors in the field all Blackfoot needed was a run and they got that run when Tobey drove a pitch over the outfield fence in the third inning for a 1-0 lead. Three innings later, Tobey again drilled a pitch over the fence for her sixth home run in the first five games of the season.
"She has such a short, compact swing," coach Chavez said. "She just let the pitcher supply the power and she just drilled it."
"Sami MacFee also had a nice game for us today," coach Chavez continued. "She had some key hits and played a solid defensive game. Taylor Beers had some big stops at third for us as well."
Blackfoot (5-0) will look to continue their hot start to 2013 when they travel to Hillcrest on Thursday for a game with the Lady Knights.
