Updated: Courthouse Lockdown

January 13, 2012

Sheriff Dave Johnson and County Commissioners Whitney Manwaring and Cleone Jolley were among the first to leave the building.

BLACKFOOT – The lockdown at the Bingham County Courthouse was lifted after a four hour wait Friday afternoon.

The lockdown was initiated at noon Friday after a white substance was discovered in an envelope received by the Treasurer's Office. The substance remains unidentified but testing conducted by the Region Six Hazardous Materials Response Team determined that it was not a biological or chemical threat.

Those inside the courthouse—an estimated 300 people including employees and citizens—were allowed to leave at 4 p.m.

The Sheriff's Office plans to send the substance to Boise for additional testing.
