Vera Mae Lass, 92
Vera Mae Neves Lass, 92, a long-time Blackfoot resident, passed away peacefully at her daughter’s home in Weston, Wisc., on March 15, 2013. At the time of her death, Vera had lived with her daughter for five months in Wisconsin.
Vera was born 92 years ago to Richard Carl Neves and Samantha Johnson Neves in Burlington, Wyo., on April 22, 1920. With her quickness in school, Vera skipped two grades and began college at Brigham Young University at the age of 16. Just a few years later, she was teaching in a one-room country school.
Vera met her husband, Erwin, at a dance at the Coconut Grove in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1945. The next day Erwin shipped out to Hawaii. The two wrote letters every day until Vera traveled by ship to Honolulu where she and Erwin were married on March 9, 1946, at the Honolulu Stake Tabernacle and later sealed in the Honolulu LDS Temple on Dec. 13, 1947. One of the highlights of Vera’s life was the four beautiful years she and Erwin spent living in Honolulu. Vera learned to hula, and loved Hawaiian coconuts and pineapples. She worked for Pacific Air Command as a secretary.
Erwin and Vera moved to Blackfoot in 1952 and lived in the Blackfoot Third Ward, Blackfoot South Stake, for 60 years. On her antique manual typewriter, Vera wrote family letters, road shows and skits for ward activities, often typing late into the night. Vera served in Primary, Mutual, and Relief Society and served as an ordinance worker with her husband at the Idaho Falls Temple.
Vera and Erwin had been married 66 years when Erwin passed away on July 1, 2012, in Blackfoot.
Vera is survived by her three children, Kerry Sue McBain (Mort) of Weston, Wisc., and her sons Mark of Blackfoot, and Jeff of San Jose, Califa. She is grandmother to Colin and Jennifer McBain, Evan McBain, Lorin and Shauna McBain, Cami and Thomas Rebentisch, and Lesley McBain; and seven great-grandchildren: Cody, Shelby, Ellie, Owen, Neal, Sara, and Madeline.
A viewing will be held at Hawker Funeral Home, 132 South
Shilling Avenue, Blackfoot, on Saturday, March 23, from noon -1:30 p.m., followed by a short service at 1:30 at the funeral home, after which family members will gather at the family home. Interment will be in the Grove City Cemetery.
