Verlin Bert Bowman, 86

May 16, 2014

Verlin Bert Bowman, 86, of Blackfoot, passed away Saturday, December 7, 2013 at Bingham Memorial Skilled Nursing and Rehab.
Verlin was born Nov. 18, 1927, in Rockford, Idaho, to Bertram M. and Verna Barnes Bowman. He was the oldest child and had sisters: Lila (married to LaVar Murdock), and Cleo (married to Doyle Jones).
His father passed away when Verlin was 12 years old and his mother passed away one day after his 14th birthday. After their deaths, he lived with his grandmother, Bertha Bowman and later with his uncle and aunt, Clarence “Fizz” and Ruby Parsons.
Verlin quit school and enlisted in the Navy on Valentine’s Day, 1946, at the age of 18. Much of his service time was spent with the early occupation forces in Japan. He received his GED while in the Navy and was discharged in December, 1947. After his time in the Navy, he returned to Blackfoot and lived with uncle and aunt, Melvin and Lile Bowman.
He was an avid fisherman and hunter his entire life.
Verlin married Patricia Ann Reay, Aug. 19, 1951. They celebrated their 62nd anniversary this year. He took great pride in children Linda (married to Mark Kessler), Jim (married to Ruth Ann Bowman) and Bob; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Verlin spent several years working at different lumber yards, and retired from Basic American Foods. No one enjoyed retirement more than Verlin. He spent a great deal of time in his shop making birdhouses, feeders, and fish decoys. These creations made their way to many states and he peddled them across the countryside. He also created barrel trains and loved taking neighborhood children for rides and treating many at pride days. His vegetable garden was important to him and he raised lots of tomatoes!
According to his wishes, cremation took  place, under the direction of Hawker Funeral Home.
A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 17, 2014 at the Senior Citizens Center, 20 E. Pacific St. in Blackfoot, Idaho.
Please consider memorial contributions be made to: Elks Rehabilitation System, 600 N. Robbins Road, Boise, Idaho 83702 or to the charity of your choice.
