BLACKFOOT — The Flame of Hope will pass through Shelley and Blackfoot on its way to the opening of the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Boise.
The Idaho State Police will be part of the 2009 Final Leg Torch Run through Idaho as the flame travels throughout the state.
The Flame of Hope will arrive from Greece in Couer d'Alene on Thursday and visit several Idaho cities prior to the Opening Ceremonies in Boise on Feb. 6.
The run is scheduled to reach Shelley at 2:40 p.m. on Monday. The runners will start at the Shelley Police Department.
They will run down Emerson to State Street and turn onto Fur Street before finishing at Shelley High School, a distance of .9 miles.
Following a 30-minute ceremony, the Flame of Hope will be taken to Blackfoot.
The next set of runners will start at the Potato Museum on Main Street at 4:10 p.m. Their course starts on Highway 91. They will proceed to Bridge Street, turn onto Meridian and arrive at Jensen Grove, a 1.3 mile run, at 4:40 p.m.
After a 30-minute ceremony at Jensen Grove, the flame will be on its way to Ketchum.
The Final Leg is tradition for law enforcement officers to represent their state and act as “Guardians of the Flame” as they carry the torch to the opening ceremonies of the Special Olympics World Games. The Final Leg is the culmination of Torch Run events that have occurred across the world.
The Final Leg Team will be made up of law enforcement runners, Special Olympics athletes, and support team members. The team will consist of 120 members.
