By Leslie Mielke BLACKFOOT — One of the features at Blackfoot Pride Days will be Sprint Boat demonstrations. Contributed Photo Sprint boat, En Fuego, participated in Thunderbowl Racing in Marsing, Idaho, during the 2006 racing season. The driver is Doug Hendrickson; his navigator is Bill Schmidt.
These demonstrations will run throughout the Snow Machine Races from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 13, at Jensen Grove. This is the second year sprint boats have participated in Pride Days. The granddaddy of all sprint boats races is held in Marsing, Idaho. Sprint boats races are timed events. Landfill is used to develop a course in a canal or waterway, where the boats race. Each boat is big enough to hold two people--the driver and the navigator. The driver is directed through the circuitous route by his or her navigator. The navigator uses hand signals to direct the driver through the course. “The boats are not necessarily large,” Blackfoot Mayor Mike Virtue said, “but they are powerful.” “Some of the boats have 350 Chevy engines in them,” Virtue said. The sprint boats will not be racing at Jensen Grove but each driver will demonstrate his or her skill and the boat’s speed and agility.
