Aberdeen resident Raymond Clark, formerly of Scotland, leans hard into a turn at a Tooele, Utah racetrack.
Raymond Clark rides with Racing 2 Save Lives, which organizes the event annually to donate to charities such as the Make-a-Wish Foundation, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and other groups focused on childen.
The 2009 event raised more than $17,000, which is to be distributed to the aforementioned charities throughout the country.
Participants raise money individually, and the amount raised is used to determine the amount of distance they'll cover at the track.
“However much money you raise buys you so many laps,” Clark said. “It's a great way of raising money for a good cause.”
Clark covered more than 550 miles during a two-day period, riding a Suzuki GFXR 600 motorcycle.
Clark entered the event with a sponsorship from Blackfoot's Premier Technology, where he works as a project manager.
Clark first participated after his son was diagnosed with a brain cyst, and he decided to continue volunteering with the hopes of minimizing any complications from medical conditions.
“That kind of gives me some emotional involvement in the thing,” he said. “My son turned out to be OK. He was a lot more fortunate than others.”
Racing 2 Save Lives works with several U.S. tracks, leading events similar to the Utah race throughout the year.
Clark said in addition to helping a worthy cause, the organization is raising awareness of the sport he loves and showing amateur riders there's a safe venue to enjoy the adrenaline of racing.
With 15 years of motorcycle racing experience, Clark is familiar with tracks around the United States and abroad, including his native Scotland.
“Premier Technology made a very generous contribution toward the event this year, and I would like to give them recognition," he said.
