By Leslie Mielke BLACKFOOT – Two members of the Prime Cut 4-H Club are Levi Adams and Cody Killian from Firth.
Levi is an entrepreneur, having started his own Angus herd in Spring 2009. With a loan from the USDA Youth Loan Program, Levi received $5,000 with two percent interest to purchase his first five head of Angus cattle. Of Levi’s heifer, Missy, was born Dec. 31, 2008. The judge said Levi’s heifer had a lot of rib, a lot of body and a wide set in her ribs. Levi was awarded a trophy for the year’s Best New Breeder. Of Cody’s bull, the judge said he was a big, stout, powerful, quality bull. “He will be a really good market bull calf,” the judge said. Asked what they have learned, the boys said, “It’s hard work.” What did you learn? “Keep your eye on the judge,” Levi said. “You need to hold the rope with your right hand when you’re leading the animal, then switch the rope to your left hand so you can use the show stick in your right hand to set them up.” Cody said, “To set them up means their feet and legs are square.” This is the first year Levi and Cody have participated in 4-H. Both boys are 10 years old and fifth graders at Firth Middle School.
