Nurses recognized for outstanding care

BLACKFOOT — Three nurses at Bingham Memorial Hospital were recently recognized by the March of Dimes for their outstanding patient care, providing a significant contribution to the nursing profession and affecting a positive change in the workplace. The three Jens—Jennifer Davis, Jennifer Ellefson and Jennifer Pugmire—work in the Intensive Care Unit at Bingham Memorial. They have been working together for approximately one year, but their team dynamic and compassion for their patients have left an impression on many.
“We work really well together as a team,” Davis said. And because of the nature of their job, that teamwork is a vital part of their jobs.
“There’s no way you can do everything,” Ellefson said.
Pugmire has worked at BMH for nearly two years, and graduated from Idaho State University with her associate’s degree in nursing.
Ellefson also attended ISU and is a registered nurse with a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing.
Davis graduated from nursing school in Ohio with a BSN. She worked at various ICU’s in Ohio for three years before coming to BMH. Her husband, who is a surgeon, also works at BMH.
The three Jens are widely known for their one-on-one care of patients in the ICU. Because their patients are in critical condition, the nurses develop a connection to the patients and their families.
“You actually feel like you’re part of their family,” Davis said.
They said sometimes patients are there for a day, a week, or even a month. In the longer cases they grow extremely attached to their patients and become more emotionally involved because they have had setbacks in their health that require them to stay longer to receive care.
But even for patients that stay one day, the Jens leave an impression.
“We get so much recognition from our patients,” Davis said, adding that former patients send cards of thanks and stop by the ICU just to say hello.
While receiving the recognition from the March of Dimes is significant, the three Jens all agreed that it is nice, but recognition from their patients is much more valuable. They were also glad that they all three received the award together.
“I was glad that these guys could stand up there with me,” Ellefson said.
