By: Ryan Thatcher BLACKFOOT — The Blackfoot wrestling team continued it’s march over competition this season with a solid 49-16 victory over 5A powerhouse Idaho Falls.
morning news — ryan thatcher Rollie Lane individual champion and Bronco senior 189-pounder JC Percy tussles with Clark Oakey of Idaho Falls in his dominating 21-4 technical fall victory.
Starting at 152, Blackfoot got things going early and often as senior Trey Sykes closed out his match in 1:52 of the first period with a pin. The Broncos then reeled off three consecutive technical fall wins starting with Ruben Hernandez at 160. The junior grappler ran out to a 13-4 first period lead before finishing off a 21-5 technical fall victory followed by Kyle Sargent’s 16-1 tech fall at 171 and JC Percy getting a 21-4 tech fall at 189. Alfonso Hernandez at 215 scored a 13-1 major decision before Idaho Falls gained it’s first points of the night with a decision victory at heavyweight. Already with a 28-3 lead, Blackfoot countered with two freshmen at 103 and 112 getting hard fought victories. Matt Gallegos at 103 held a slight lead the entire six minutes on his way to a 5-3 decision before Stetson Jorgensen at 112 went ahead 7-0 after the first period before finishing off his opponent with a pin at 2:35 of the second period. The match of the night came down to Blackfoot’s Kyle Williams and Jordan Cox of Idaho Falls at 119. Both grapplers looked ready for a battle on the first whistle and didn’t stop until the fourth and final overtime period. The two wrestlers did this all knotted up 0-0 throughout what turned out to be a 9 minute, 30 second match. Most matches last six minutes but in overtime, a one-minute period followed by three 30 second OT periods could exhaust any fine-tuned wrestler. But not Williams, who rode out the final 30 seconds for a 1-0 four overtime win. “Best match of the year,” BHS head coach Brian Barlow said of the 119-pound duel. “Those kids were cruising. And it’s not like they were stalling, they were both trying to score points the entire match.” Leo Torres at 125 followed up Williams’ victory with a pin at the 2:36 mark of the second period to make sure Idaho Falls couldn’t come back as the Broncos led 43-3 after Torres’ victory. Conner Bingham, who won his 100th match of his career at the Rollie Lane tournament on his way to a second-place finish, got his 103rd win of his four-years in a BHS singlet with a pin at 5:13 of the third period after he was already up 25-8. But Idaho Falls finished the night winning the final three weights in some competitive matches. Barlow didn’t think his team would put up this big of numbers against the Tigers but, nonetheless, it’s the victory that counts. “You can’t expect to win that big going against IF,” he said. Barlow thought the opening weights winning big set the tone for night. “Our big guns scored some big points,” Barlow said. The coach saw good things all night but the effort of his freshmen, Gallegos and Jorgensen, along with Chris Percy at 140, Alex Martinez at heavyweight stood out to Barlow. Blackfoot returns to the mats tonight with a tri-match at Century with Minico. BHS wrestles second after Minico-Century. The Broncos will wrestle 6-6:30 p.m with Minico before taking on the host, Diamondbacks in the nightcap. Blackfoot won’t get rest until after this weekend’s Madison Invitational Friday and Saturday in Rexburg.
