No re-vote on wind project

    BLACKFOOT — The proposed Goshen South Wind Project that would place 150 wind turbines in the mountains east of Blackfoot will go back to the County Commissioners to finish an appeal of its special use permit following a decision by the Planning and Zoning Commission on Wednesday that member Larry Kohler’s vote in favor of the permit for the turbines can stand.

Top Senior Awards

    BLACKFOOT —Twenty eight seniors from area high schools were honored with kind words, shiny plaques and a free lunch at the annual Top Senior Awards on Wednesday at the Shilling House Reception Center.

    Blackfoot Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Stephanie Govatos said the award ceremony is the most attended chamber luncheon event, calling it the highlight of the year. More than one dozen tables seating eight people each were positioned close to one another to allow enough seating for attendees.
    Butch Hulse, Blackfoot Chamber of Commerce president, rushed through chamber business in order to let the award winners announce their plans to the crowd from behind a podium.
    The following are Top Seniors from Snake River High School: Britney Fife plans to attend Bringham young University-Idaho this summer to earn a bachelor’s degree in music education before attending The Julliard School to earn a doctorate; Kwani Hale said she will attend BYU-Idaho to major in biology before becoming a pediatrician; Kandace Hansen announced her plans to attend college after receiving her plaque; Sunni Hansen has plans to attend BYU-Provo to major in interior design; Zachary Hansen expects a mission call from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to arrive in his mailbox today, and after his mission he plans to attend Stanford University; Brandon Ibarra said he’s excited about going to school in Seattle after completing the Idaho State University Home Health Program; Kirk Katseanes said he will complete an LDS mission before working toward becoming an anesthesiologist; Chase Staker said he has no idea what he will do after completing an LDS mission and attending BYU-Idaho, but he knows he wants to become an aeronautical engineer; JulieAnn Tonks plans to attend BYU-Provo and become a surgeon after earning a bachelor’s degree in biophysics; Angela Winder said she’ll go to BYU-Idaho this summer to  take classes in early childhood education before possibly working toward a master’s degree in speech pathology; Claudia Luna plans to attend BYU-Idaho this summer before ending up at either Seattle Pacific University or Boston University or Stanford University; and SaraKay Larsen will spend the summer working before earning a bachelor’s degree in music education from BYU-Idaho.
    Idaho Leadership Academy Top Seniors are Valerie Jensen who plans to learn business management at BYU-Idaho and Ashley Withers has plans to major in nursing at BYU Idaho this winter.
    Independence Alternate High School Top Seniors Shanda Page will go camping this summer before attending ISU, and Devena Stiffarm was recognized, but was not present at the event.
    The following are Top Seniors from Blackfoot High School: Emily Cannon will major in chemical engineering at BYU in the fall; Kayla Carrigan is looking forward to becoming a member of the University of Delaware dance team and majoring in psychology there; Rachel Cottam, and her sister, Rebekah Cottam, plan to major in music education at BYU-Provo; Ryan Davis will major in business at BYU-Provo, “But that will probably change,” he said; Daniel Gundersen will major in physics next fall at BYU before going on an LDS mission; Jessie Lilya will go into the architectual field at Utah State University or ISU; Nicole Norton plans to work in the creative writing and editing field after earning a bachelor’s degree from BYU-Idaho in the fall; J.C. Percy is scheduled to attend Boise State University football camp June 5 and might major in either pre-med or business; Kelsey Porter asked the crowd for help in finding employment before announcing her plans to major in business administration at BYU-Idaho; Kyle Sargent hopes to become a certified registered nurse anesthetist after completing his LDS mission and wrestling for Jamestown College in North Dakota; and Kayelee Williams will major in biology at Utah State University in hope of becoming a genetic engineer.
    “What a great group of young people,” Hulse exclaimed before the audience applauded.
    Student sponsors were ISU Federal Credit Union, Anytime Fitness, Kathy & Company, Farmer’s Insurance, Davita Snake River Dialysis Center, Preferred Properties, Bright Pest Management, Total Merchant Services, Blackfoot Mayor Mike Virtue, Councilman Ferrel D. Cammack, The Morning News, KPVI News Channel 6, Plaza Twin Theater, ISU Foundation, Zion’s Bank, Blackfoot Drug Prevention Coalition, Taylor Real Estate, Spudnik, Conquest Insurance, Valley Medical, Blackfoot Chevron, and Phoenix Lumber.
    Sponsors paid $40 that went to providing lunches and plaques for the students.
    The luncheon sponsor was Davita Snake River Dialysis and the business of the month was American Family Insurance.
