New SR sign boosts community appeal
Friday, 11 July 2008

 By Richard Toynton

THOMAS — Usually a new sign just lets more people know about a business or establishment, but the one installed outside Snake River High School on Highway 39 recently will benefit  the community surrounding it.

The time and temperature are displayed for several seconds on the new electronic marquee outside of the Snake River Community Library on Highway 39. The new sign was installed June 25, and it will advertise school, library and community events.

Snake River Community Library Director Sherrilynn Bair said the electronic scrolling marquee cost about $27,000 total after installation, and was a venture made possible by cooperation among the Snake River School District, Snake River Community Library and Twin Buttes Lion’s Club.
The sign displays any text inputted into a computer program on a computer at the library. It can display simple graphics like the American flag in shades of red, and Bair said the software is very easy to use.
“I’m still working on the fine tuning—the size and speed,” Bair said. When she drives to the library, she takes note of how readable the messages on it are to motorists before she lengthens or shortens their display time.
The Twin Buttes Lions donated $500 toward the sign with the expectation that their volunteer service organization would have their events promoted in the moving red letters on the sign.
This expectation is perfectly acceptable, according to Bair who plans to advertise all non-profit events, fundraisers and happenings among local civic organizations in addition to school events.

SRHS student body president Kelton Jenkins, 17, from Pingree, Bair and Glenna Hale, Twin Buttes Lions Club president, met at the library Thursday to talk about what things could be advertised on the sign.
“If someone wanted to ask someone to prom, you could do that?” Jenkins asked Bair, who replied, “We could do that!”
Jenkins said he was really happy about the installation of the new sign. “It will make the school look better and bring people to school for football games and other events.”
The new sign was installed June 25, and it replaced an old, non-moveable marquee that used plastic lettering. Bair said the new sign calmed her fears that a student may be injured while changing the old sign’s lettering from an about 15-foot-tall ladder.
“We ran out of letters for the old sign and couldn’t buy new ones because they didn’t sell them anymore,” she added.
The Twin Buttes Lions will host their annual summer barbecue benefitting people who can’t afford prescription glasses and other medical expenses from 5  to 8 p.m. July 16 at Rockford Park on Hilltop Road.
Roasted pork and beef, corn on the cob, salad, rolls, watermelons and drinks will be served for $6 per plate or $25 per person.
