BLACKFOOT — Mountain View Middle School received a science and math improvement grant from the Toshiba America Foundation in the amount of $1,600. Chad Majeske applied for the grant to purchase a proper testing machine for the toothpick bridges the students design and build.

Mountain View Middle School received a science and math improvement grant to purchase a Pitsco Exclusive bridge testing machine, like the one seen here.

The project began last year and Majeske was using homemade weights to test the strength and structural integrity of the bridges.
“We were using a manual weight system that was not very accurate. Now we will be able to test the structures using a consistent machine,” Majeske said.
Students learn about bridge history and design. They work together in small groups to discuss ideas, create bridge designs and construct bridges. After the bridges are built, students test the structures integrity by applying weight increments.
The bridge project will teach students how to operate a business with the students taking the roles of accountants, architects and carpenters.
The mission of the Toshiba America Foundation is to contribute to the quality of science and mathematics education in U.S. communities.
“I applied for this grant for the kids. These projects makes their school experience more interesting and real,” Majeske said.
