Wapello students and families run for health

April 17, 2012

The Morning News — Leslie Mielke The Wapello Timberwolf Trot took place Monday evening. These girls are making another corner on the 200-meter track. The Trot was sponsored by Wapello PTA. Proceeds will benefit the school.

Students, parents, babies in baby carriers and one dog circled the track set up at Wapello Elementary Monday evening.
The track for the Wapello Timberwolf Trot measured 200 meters. Every eight and one-quarter laps equalled one mile.
"We challenged the kids to walk or run one hour," PTA president Krystal Wray said.
"A quote from Will Smith summed up our objective," she said. Smith was quoted as saying, "There are two keys to success--running and reading. If you conquer the demon that tells you to give up, you can conquer anything."
"We wanted to promote health and wellness," said Wray.
PTA members started brainstorming during October or November.
Kids were asked to collect pledges for each lap or a flat donation, Wray said. A letter went home explaining the project.
Eleven sponsors volunteered to purchase T-shirts for every kid in the school. These sponsors are Wray Dermatology Center, Robison Roofing, Inc., Champion Overhead Doors, Out West Trucking, Bingham Memorial Hospital, Blackfoot Medical Center, Hyde Plumbing, Simpson Dental Offices, Inc., Idaho Kidney Center, Johnson Brothers and Anytime Fitness.
Tom Smith from The Party Pros provided music for the trot.
After their hour of walking, students and families were welcome to eat at a potato bar. Basic American donated chili; NonPareil donated potatoes.
The students have until Friday to collect their pledges.
