Winona Searle Thompson, 89
Our loving mother, and grandmother, Winona Avilda Searle Thompson, 89, of Pingree, Idaho arrived home to join her loved ones in Heaven, Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls, Idaho, surrounded by her loving family as she went gracefully from this earthly life. She passed away from injuries due to a fall.
Winona was born Sept. 9, 1924 in Shelley, Idaho to Avilda and Eli Searle. She was the only girl in the middle of five brothers. Her childhood was filled with family and friends. Riding the sleigh on Christmas mornings, thinning the beets, swimming in the canals, canning the family-grown produce and picking potatoes. Active in school, she served as the head cheerleader and seminary president during her high school years. Favorite pastimes included dancing at the Wandemere, movies and spending time with friends. She graduated from Shelley High school in 1942 and continued her education taking business courses.
She married her high school sweetheart, Garth Bodell Thompson for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake City Temple March 2, 1945. They shared a love that radiated for 62 earthly years together. He preceded her in death on Nov. 3, 2006. They were remarkable examples to seven boys and two girls.
Neither her hands nor mind were ever idle. She was renowned for many talents. Whether she was making clothes for her growing family, baking delicious meals, or helping out on the farm, she kept herself busy. Winona’s hobbies and interests included being an excellent seamstress, gardening and canning, being a fantastic cook, traveling, oil painting, handwork, and seeking out fun!
There was always a party where mom/grandma was. Mom being the ultimate hostess meant never leaving her home hungry. Her greatest love and priority was her family and she enjoyed time spent with them. She was always giving, always caring for each of us unselfishly.
Winona was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, friend, and sister. She leaves a posterity appreciative of the remarkable woman she was. We are ever thankful for her example of integrity, strength, support and positive attitude.
An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Winona rendered Christ-like service to many. She served as a stake Primary president, Relief Society president and Young Women’s president and many other callings.
Winona’s greatest treasure was her family which includes sons, Larry & Nona (currently serving a mission in Slovania Adriadic Mission), Daryl & Katharine, Chris & Colleen, John & Cheryl, Paul & Laurie, Ron & Mindy, Kurt & Connie, all of Blackfoot; daughters, Jan & Arden Smith of Blackfoot and Tamra & John Brabec of Idaho Falls; brother, Merwyn & Joyce Searle of Shelley, sisters-in-law, Carol Searle of Salt Lake City, Utah; Ruthe Searle of Idaho Falls, Jalna Searle of Shelley; 37 grandchildren and 80 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Garth; brothers, Earl, Wendell, Leon, and Karl Searle; and grandchildren, Tyson Thompson and Berkley Brabec.
The family would like to thank their mother for her incredible example of love and service to our Heavenly Father, our Dad, and each of them. We love you, Mom.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 31, 2014 at the Pingree LDS Chapel.
