SHELLEY — Behind a double-double by senior post Sadee Wattenbarger, the Shelley Lady Russets completed a season sweep of their county neighbors on Tuesday evening by beating Blackfoot 57-41.
The game got off to a late start, due to some scheduling confusion, but the Lady Russets did anything but start late, sprinting from the opening tip with a full court pressure package that led to a 19-6 lead after the first period of play.
"That was part of our game plan, we wanted to get the flow of the game going really fast and that's why we went to the press early on to get that flow in our favor," Shelley head coach Burke Davis said. "We were able to get those turnovers which led to some easy baskets and a high confidence level."
That momentum spilled over into the second quarter of play as point guard Hailey Hathaway turned in a fine game Shelley, finding the open man on countless occasions as Shelley opened a commanding 35-13 lead after the first half.
"I thought that we had a lot better team play tonight than we've had in the past," coach Davis said. "We were able to make that extra pass to the open man and I was happy to see that going on tonight."
Down but certainly not out, Blackfoot came out with much better energy in the second half of play as Cerissa Honena knocked down a pair of treys and a back court freshmen duo of Cassandra Clarke and Lacey Turpin turned in fine performances as the Lady Broncos tried to climb back into the game.
"I thought that both teams played hard," coach Davis said. "Blackfoot played hard right till the end and I think that's a credit too them. They made a little run there in the second half and Hailey Hathaway stepped up and hit a big shot which kind of stopped their run which was big for us."
In the end Shelley's large lead proved too much to overcome for the Lady Broncos and despite outscoring Shelley by 6 in the half, the Lady Russets held on for a comfortable conference victory.
Shelley (9-10, 4-6) will close out the regular season on Thursday at Skyline and will open district tournament play on Saturday.
Blackfoot (2-17, 0-9) finish up their season on Thursday as well when they host Bonneville for senior night at 7:30 P.M.
