FIRTH — A new trustee was appointed in Firth, the board was reorganized and meeting dates were set during the July school board meeting Thursday.
April Christensen was the only person to submit an application for the open trustee position. She was appointed trustee for Zone 5 (the Firth town site) in the Firth School District and will be sworn into office during the board's August meeting.
Asked what she sees as the biggest issue facing the board, Christensen said, "Communication between the community and board members; getting information to them including how it's given and how community members are approached.
"I'm not afraid to stand up for things and talk to people," Christensen said.
Barlow Cook and Brian Esplin were sworn into office for four-year terms.
The trustees reorganized the board, however, it will have the same officers. Barlow Cook was elected chairman. Casey Park will serve as vice-chairman and John Monson is the treasurer.
Trustees serving on the Superintendent's Advisory Committees are:
° Budget—Brian Esplin
° Strategic Planning—John Monson
° Curriculum—April Christensen
° Technology—Casey Park
Trustees will meet at 8 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month in the Firth High School auditorium. Patrons will need to sign in to make comments. Because the public comment period is at the end of the meeting, patrons will be able to make comments about subjects brought up during the meeting.
Fee increases have been proposed. Elementary registration is proposed to be $30 per student. High School registration is to be $35 per student. The fee for a high school art class is $10.
Athletic fees are proposed to increase from $70 to $100 per sport.
Middle school registration is proposed to be $35 per student.
Teachers Brett Hill and Shannon Hill each submitted a letter of resignation. Brett Hill will teach math at Madison High School in Rexburg.
A discussion about Virtual Charter School was introduced by Charlotte Reid. Board members will take time to study this issue.
