Archie LaMar Mecham, 86, of Blackfoot, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2011 at his home from the effects of a stroke.
Archie was born Nov.18, 1924, in Ogden, Utah, to Melvin and Rozella May Pritchett Mecham. He grew up in the Groveland-Rose area and graduated from Blackfoot High School and LDS Seminary on May of 1942.
During his senior year he met Marjorie Denney at MIA in the Groveland Ward. In November 1944 he was drafted into the Army. After basic training, he married his sweetheart, Marjorie, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on March 30, 1945.
Archie spent the next 50 years farming in the Groveland and Rising River area. They loved to boat and fish at Yellowstone Park.
Archie was active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in numerous ward and stake positions. He and Marjorie served together as stake Young Men and Young Women president. In 1972 he was sustained as bishop of the Groveland Ward. In 1982 he was sustained as Blackfoot South stake president, a position he held for 10 years.
Archie was active in Scouting, on the Bingham Co-op and Land of Lakes boards of directors and enjoyed traveling to board meetings. He and Marjorie enjoyed traveling around the world with family and friends.
In 1999 he and Marjorie served in the Kentucky Louisville Mission and in 2003-2004 he served in Las Mochis, Mexico, teaching them to grow better potatoes on the church farms there. He was instrumental in finding and buying our present girls camp.
He was called as a sealer in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple in 1993 and was able to seal numerous grandchildren in temples around the United States.
Archie is survived by his sweetheart of 66 years, Marjorie Vivian Denney; sons, Steven (Martha) and Kevin (Lori), both of Groveland; Doug (Nicole) and John, both of Phoenix, Ariz.; daughters, Taunya (Roger) Herrick of Salem, Ore.; Tyana (Kent) Lyons of Centerville, Utah and Cristi Thompson of Hagerman; sisters Ramona (Mark) Fullmer of Pocatello and Zelma (Art) Bell of Inkom; and brothers, Bill (Joan) Mecham of Idaho Falls, Earl (Mikki) Mecham of St. George, Utah, and Larry (Carol) Mecham of Monteview.
Archie was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Marjie Dawn; son-in-law, LaMar Thompson; brothers, Hubert (Lorraine) and Darrel, who drowned at age three; and sisters, Donna (Terry) Parsons and Wanona (Howard) Nestor.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 3, 2011, at the Groveland LDS church. A viewing will take place from 7-9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 2, 2011, at Hawker Funeral Home, 132 South Shilling in Blackfoot and for one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.
Interment will be in the Groveland Cemetery where final military rites will be presented by American Legion Stewart Hoover Post #23. Condolences may be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org .
