BLACKFOOT — Once a month, volunteers with the Mobile Food Pantry distribute food to those in need in the community—and more volunteers are needed.
The Mobile Food Pantry, sponsored by the Community Dinner Table, Blackfoot Community Pantry and the Idaho Foodbank, takes place the fourth Thursday of each month. The Food Pantry is currently operating at 340 W. Sexton St.
In July and August, the pantry served 160 families. They distribute between 8,000 and 10,000 pounds of food each month.
"We need volunteers," said Rhonda Cheatham, food pantry coordinator. " Help us out in helping those that need food in this area."
Volunteers are needed the fourth Thursday of each month. The food pantry is open from 10 a.m.-noon, but setup begins around 8:30 a.m. and cleanup ends around 1 p.m. Volunteers do not need to serve the entire time.
Volunteers help unload the food from the truck, sort the items, hand out food and help carry boxes for recipients.
Cheatham said ideally they are seeking volunteers who can serve consistently each month or every other month. Twenty-five volunteers are needed each month to make the distribution successful. Groups are also welcome to volunteer.
Those interested in volunteering need to call 785-3611 or 557-8232. Distributions in November and December will be held at a different time due to the holidays.
The Mobile Food Pantry serves those in the area in need of assistance. There is no need for proof of income or residence and those receiving food are encouraged to bring a container to carry their food.
