ST. ANTHONY — The Firth Lady Cougars looked in mid season form on Tuesday nights season opener as they traveled to 3A South Fremont for a non-conference showdown with the Lady Cougars of South Fremont.
In the end, it wasn't much of a contest however as Firth built a big first quarter lead and then played add on for the remainder of the night in a impressive 48-27 victory.
"I am just so proud of the kids," Firth head coach Sharla Cook said. "I really thought that they did an excellent job showing poise and confidence all night."
Firth opened the game with the first two baskets before South Fremont responded with a three ball, making the score 4-3 Firth.
That was all the scoring that the home team would be able to muster for the next 10 minutes on the game clock though as Firth went on a 14-0 run over the remainder of the first quarter and into the second.
"Defensively we did some really good things as a team." Coach Cook said. "It was a total team effort. We've been working a lot on helping on the defensive end and you could see that they are understanding that. I saw a lot of good things."
Defensively Firth was nearly flawless as they collected 12 steals as a team on the evening.
Offensively, Firth was led by Kayla Jensen who poured in 15 points, 9 of which came in a first half that witnessed Firth leading by 13 heading into the locker room for the half.
Every member of the Firth team scored on the night. Jensen also led the team with 8 rebounds as Firth out rebounded the South Fremont squad 32-19 on the evening.
"We were a little more patient with our zone offense which I was happy to see," Coach Cook said. "We still have a lot of things to work on but I really was proud of the way that they played tonight."
Firth (1-0) will be back in action tonight, as they travel to West Side for a non-conference tilt with the Lady Pirates tipping off at 7:30 P.M.
