ST. ANTHONY- The Firth Cougars boys basketball faced off against the Butte Pirates Thursday night, in an intense game between the conferences top two squads. In the end, Firth dominated the night with a 59-42 win over the Pirates sending them into next weeks 2A Nuclear Conference championship game.
Firth was able to keep their lead through the whole game as they built a sizable lead that was never threatened for the better part of three quarters of play.
In the first quarter they ended one point ahead 8-7. In the second quarter they gained a six point lead going into the half, 26-20. With the help of Brenner Coughlan who connected a three point basket and Austin Leslie who made two more three pointers for the Cougars.
When the Cougars came into the second half of the game they were able to score 13 points and defensively hold the Pirates to only four points in the third quarter as they built a 15 point bulge.
That lead held, despite the Pirates best efforts as they didn't have enough in the tank to put a stop to the perennial conference champions.
“They did a lot better in the second half. They executed better and there was more patience on the offense,” Firth head coach Scott Adams said, “ In the first half they kind of started panicking a little bit.”
Firths top scorers for the night were Mitch Orme with 16 points, Leslie who added 14 points, and Jacob Feilding with 10.
With the win, Firth wraps up a berth in the 2A state tournament and the Cougars will play again on Wednesday at South Fremont high school at 7 P.M. against the winner of the Butte and Ririe game for the conference title.
“I told the boys that we reached one goal by making it to State but now we have to win State,” Adams said, “ I am really proud of the team.”
