SHELLEY — Even though there was a slight chill outside, there was a heated game when the Shelley Russets baseball team hosted the Idaho Falls Tigers Saturday morning.
Shelley got the better end of a ten run rule win as the Russets walked off with the 15-5 win, before the bottom of the sixth inning was finished.
The Russets took the quick lead over the Tigers when they made four runs in the bottom of the first inning.
After a lone Tiger run in the top of the second inning the Russets tacked on 6 more runs in the home half of the third inning. In the uprising, Shelley took advantage of two hit batsmen and four walks as the Tiger pitcher became wild on the hill. Josh Gutierrez hit a 3 RBI double as Caleb Pack, Kaden Schmitt, and Josh Peterson slid into home for the commanding 10-1 lead.
Schmitt also hit an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth plating T.J. Stommel and Kalen Young. Schmitt eventually came in to score, ending the game with the 15th run of the contest.
“Josh Gutierrez had a hot bat today and we had some good pitching with Schmitt,” Shelley assistant coach Jim Cook said.
Shelley’s defense only allowed the Tigers to make one run in the second inning and held them there until the fifth, where they gained one more. But in the top of the sixth the Tigers snatched three more runs.
“Our defense still needs a little bit of work, but our bats are coming alive and they are having some hard hits,” Coach Cook said.
Shelley (3-5, 0-2) will travel to Rigby Tuesday for a High Country Conference game starting at four.
“Things are improving, we are coming around the corner and we are looking forward to our game against Rigby,” Coach Cook said.
